Don't risk your health or safety when cleaning up rodent feces!

We have all seen or had to clean up rodent feces at one point in time in our life.  Depending on what part of the country you live in, you may have mice, rats, squirrels, or bigger wildlife such as racoons, opossum, or even coyotes!

Nobody likes to clean up animal feces (poop) or urine (pee), and it becomes very disheartening because often it is damaging our belongings in sheds, garages, and attics, while also posing a serious health risk!

<img src="data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAA+gAAAGQAQAAAAAVNnfMAAAAAnRSTlMAAHaTzTgAAABHSURBVHgB7cExAQAAAMIg+6deCj9gAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAwE3E4AABALoYPgAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==" alt="Mice and Rats in attic pooping on insulation">

At Bio-One we clean up and remediate all types of animal feces and urine.  Sadly though, many times we are called on scene to disinfect something that has either been attempted to be cleaned by another “professional” company or the family/business themselves.  While things may appear to be “clean”, there may still be a lingering odor or even worse, more poop and pee than when originally started!  There are many things that people get wrong when remediating animal feces and urine, so we put together a top 5 list of things that homeowners & businesses get wrong when attempting self-remediation:

<img src="data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAABAAAAAMAAQAAAACSwSigAAAAAnRSTlMAAHaTzTgAAAB2SURBVHja7cEBAQAAAIIg/69uSEABAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADvBoMPAAHlAN1UAAAAAElFTkSuQmCC" alt="Top 5 Graphic">

1.  "I’m going to use a Shopvac to sweep up poop."

Seems straightforward right?  This is a huge no-no according to the CDC because you are placing all that particulate into the air and breathing it.  Sadly, we see “professional” companies doing this all the time, only to be contaminating the very air of their customers they claim to purify.  Feces, nests, and animal debris should be manually swept and then if you still need a vacuum, use a true HEPA vacuum.

2.  Using a HEPA-like filter vs. a True HEPA vac or Medical HEPA vac

Many Shopvac and vacuum brands will sell HEPA-like and HEPA-type filters to be outfitted on their models.  While this is in improvement over the base filter, there still is limitations on air quality, especially with certain types of particulate.  Just as its important to know what kind of poop you are cleaning up, its equally important to make sure that you and your family or business will be safe using the vacuum you are using.

3.  "I swept up all the poop…I’m good to go right?"

Most people forget that animals also pee, and yes, it is normally everywhere you found the poop.  So when you find mice feces in your cabinets, sweep it all out, then put your food back in; there is a strong chance that you only got rid of only 50% of the excrement.  Which now means that your food, clothing, and personal items are still touching or covered in rodent urine.  Yuck! A lot of times customers call Bio-One for odor removal, when in fact it is really urine clean-up and disinfection they are seeking.  The good news is that we take care of both!

 4.  "Ok, I cleaned the poop, I cleaned and disinfected for pee...why does it still smell?"

Animals, especially rodents don’t usually poop in convenient, easy to reach areas.  A big mistake is often made that simply cleaning visible feces and urine solves the problem.  Exploration is often needed to find additional sources or hard to reach areas around where the original feces and urine is located.  Checking in tight areas, pulling furniture away from walls, opening boxes, and lifting insulation is an important and critical step, so that you ensure all the impacted areas have been truly been cleaned and disinfected.

5.  "Everything has been cleaned, so why is poop still appearing?"

I know it seems straightforward, but it happens, A LOT.  Anytime we council a family or business for remediation, we make sure to coach them on finding a great exterminator to ensure that the source is taken care of and removed from the home.  For squirrels and outdoor animals, there are humane and safe ways to remove them from your property such as humane catch and release traps or agencies to assist in the process.  In the end, unless the source is truly removed, there will be a continued presence of feces, urine, and damage to clean up.

In the end, its important that your home and business is remediated properly to ensure safety for you and your loved ones.  At Bio-One of Temecula and Temecula Hoarding, we cut no corners and work closely with you to not only remediate the situation but assist with the education process so that you can maintain a safe and disinfected environment.  Call now at 951. 502-7470 if you have any questions or would like a free consultation and/or estimate.

Need help with a quick turnaround on your property?

Bio-One of Temecula can help you more than you know.  In the last month we have helped multiple Associations, Owners, and Realtors turn their properties around quickly and cost effectively.  Having owned rental property myself for the past 20 years, I know the frustrations that come with big messes left behind.  Hoarding, Pet Stains & Odors, Feces, Urine, Mold, and Drug Paraphernalia are just a few of the common issues that make it difficult for a quick flip for a new tenant or a potential sale.

Image

What often compounds the issue is that when these items are not properly addressed, they can often lead to longer term issues surrounding the building structure.  We have purchased many places where Unattended Death, Urine, and Pet Odors were not properly addressed, and we had to pay a lot of money out of pocket to have these issues remediated further down the road.  In almost all the cases, the area was “treated”, and then covered up with some sort of primer.  In cases where biohazardous material had soaked deep into the flooring, drywall, or trim boards; simply treating the surface provided short term relief, but as soon as the apartment received its first hot day, odors started to emanate from the backside to the first available wall/floor opening.

Image

Its important to find a reputable, insured company that can guarantee proper remediation so that the future owner or the future tenant is safe to live in the residence.  We understand that your budget is tight, which is why we have affordable and competitive pricing for all customers, while also offering considerable discounts for repeat business and partnerships.  Do not keep sacrificing quality because of a perception of cost.  Give us a call today for a free estimate and a chance to earn your business.

Bio-One in Action!

Last week when A&E kicked off their Season 11 Premiere of their hit show "Hoarders", it featured non other than Bio-One to assist in the remediation. The St. Louis area Bio-One team removed over 30+ tons of trash in 4 days with the help of the home's family, friends, local fire department, and volunteers.

Read the Show description here:

Over the past two decades, Carol has hoarded her husband's home. Now, she's left her husband Dave to deal with the hoard and his failing health. With the mansion threatened to be condemned, the family unites to try to save the house and confront Carol about her behavior.

Image

While this show highlights a lot of examples and different types of hoarding, it is important to realize that the show targets "extreme" versions of clutter in living situations to achieve a shock factor for the audience.  Sadly, many people suffer from clutter and hoarding tendencies that may not be nearly as "extreme", but can be just as dangerous due to a myriad of issues such as: bacteria, hidden mold, rodent feces & urine, insect infestation, or poor air quality.

We often have customers that call us asking for help, and often use the show "Hoarders" as the barometer for how their situation is not nearly as dire as the show displays.  The reality is that while their situation may not have as much clutter or trash, it may very well be a larger safety concern due to the hidden dangers.

It is important that if you, a friend, a loved one, or even a neighbor is struggling with hoarding or needing trash removal, that you reach out for help to not only remediate and restore the home, but also find counseling and if needed, physician assistance.  At Bio-One of Temecula, we have a wide range of services to meet every level of severity and some tremendous business partners that can assist with counseling and support services.

Dangers beyond the smell could be lurking in your spoiled fridge

Has your food gone foul?

All of us at one time or another have had the dubious honor of cleaning out a refrigerator or freezer that has had spoiled food leftover from the holidays.  But has anyone had the unfortunate experience of coming home from a two-week vacation, only to find your freezer full of meat stopped working the day after you left?  We have!  Yuck!

The intensity of the smell and the overall safety of handling the rotten or spoiled food will be a by product of a variety of factors that is influencing the decay.  Its important to know some of these factors before you tackle the project at hand:

<img src="data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAewAAAJnAQAAAAB9zl1LAAAAAnRSTlMAAHaTzTgAAAA8SURBVHja7cExAQAAAMKg9U9tBn+gAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOAwl1kAAaynUJMAAAAASUVORK5CYII=" alt = "refrigerator full of spoiled food that needs to be cleaned out" >

According to the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska, there are 8 factors that impact food spoilage:

Microorganisms:  Many types of microorganisms can cause food problems. The microorganisms that can cause food-borne illness are called pathogenic microorganisms. microorganisms may grow in foods without any noticeable change in odor, appearance, or taste. Spoilage microorganisms, including some kinds of bacteria, yeasts, and molds, can grow well at temperatures as low as 40°F. When spoilage microorganisms are present, the food usually looks and/or smells awful.

Enzymes:  Substances naturally present in food and are responsible for the ripening process in fruits and vegetables. Enzymes are responsible for texture, color, and flavor changes. For example, as a banana turns from green to yellow to brown, not only does the color change, but there is also a change in the fruits texture. Unblanched, frozen corn-on-the-cob may taste like the cob over time. This is the result of enzyme action.

Air: Oxidation, a chemical process that produces undesirable changes in color, flavor and nutrient content, results when air reacts with food components. When fats in foods become rancid, oxidation is responsible. Discoloration of light-colored fruits can be reduced by using an antioxidant, such as ascorbic acid or citric acid, before freezing. Vapor-proof packaging that keeps air out also helps reduce oxidation problems.

Light: Exposure could result in color and vitamin loss. Light also may be responsible for the oxidation of fats.

Insects, Rodents, Parasites and Other Creatures:  These creatures require food to survive and damage food, making it more vulnerable to further deterioration.

Physical Damage:  Bruises and cracks on raw produce leave areas where microorganisms easily may grow. Improperly packaged foods, dented cans and broken packages provide places for microorganisms, air, light, and creatures to enter. Gentle handling of food items will help maintain food quality and safety longer.

Temperature:  Affects storage time, and food deteriorates faster at higher temperatures. Microorganisms, both spoilage and pathogenic, grow rapidly at room temperature. To slow microbial growth, the enzymatic and oxidation processes, store foods at lower temperatures.  Recommended temperatures for storage areas are:

·         Cupboard/Pantry 50-70°F

·         Refrigerator 34-40°F

·         Freezer 0°F or below

Time:  Microorganisms need time to grow and multiply. Other reactions, such as oxidation and enzyme action, also require time to develop. Purchase reasonable quantities, especially of perishable foods, to help avoid long-term storage.

In severe cases, where spoilage has occurred for several weeks or even months, the decaying food, especially meats will produce very intense smells and fumes that will make it hard to breathe and can even burn your eyes.  These smells and fumes could be any combination of chemical reactions happening to the decaying food and meats:

  •  NH2 (CH2)5 NH2 – Cadaverine – a putrid and toxic chemical produced by decaying meats
  •  NH2(CH2)4NH2  - Putracine – a putrid chemical produced by decaying meats.  When heated produces NOx
  •  NH3 – Ammonia:  Released from decaying meats and food
  •  NOx – Nitrious Oxide – reacts with ammonia gas also released from decaying meats to produce Nitric Acide text.

Many websites and blogs will instruct you to “hold your nose” or “just breathe through your mouth” while cleaning.  While this may work for some situations where the spoiled food is only a few days or weeks old, unless properly equipped, the homeowner may become sick or nauseous from the fumes.  In 2009, in a large 300+ business office, an employee tackled this very issue one day, scrubbing away at a very infected and spoiled fridge, only to send 7 of her co-workers to the hospital and another 28 to be treated for nausea and vomiting.   Talk about a bad day at the office!

At Bio-One, our estimates are free, and we are happy to consult with you on any issue over the phone or in person at your home or at your business.

If you, your family, or your company have a smelly refrigerator or freezer with rotten or spoiled food, please do not hesitate to call.  Our focus is on you and your family’s safety.

Not all Hoarding is "Extreme"

Hoarding is the compulsive need to purchase or find objects, animals, household goods, or even trash regardless of their overall value.  Items commonly hoarded include magazines, newspapers, photographs, boxes, clothing, furniture, food, appliances, electronics, and even animals.  Depending on the level of severity that a person’s hoarding tendencies might be; the behavior may be impacting their emotional health, physical health, careers, and relationships with others.

Hoarding is often broadly categorized as a single outcome, but there are actual multiple levels of hoarding conditions and disorders. The National Study Group on Compulsive Disorganization created a clutter hoarding scale with five levels of hoarding. Understanding each level of hoarding disorder can help people understand how to help those affected by the condition.

<img src="data:image/png;base64,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" alt = "Home with hoarding clutter and trash that needs to be removed" >

5 Levels of Hoarding:

  • Level 1: The person does not like to throw things away and often buys items for which they may not have a need. The space only has light clutter and has no blocked entryways or walkways.
  • Level 2: Most people at this stage do not welcome visitors and are often embarrassed by the clutter. There will be a few blocked walkways or exits in the home, and sometimes unable or unwilling to clean the residence.
  • Level 3: The home is extremely cluttered and has become an unsanitary space. Fleas and other pests can be a problem, bathrooms might be non-functional and there are strong odors everywhere.
  • Level 4: Mold, mildew, excessive clutter, sewage problems, various pests, animal waste, blocked exits and unusable rooms, will be common.  Most people at stage 4 have not had a house guest in several months and even years.
  • Level 5: The home is not fit for habitation, excessive animals, bathrooms are unusable, all space is cluttered, walls are broken and there are numerous fire hazards within the residence.

From all of use here at Bio-One I urge all of you to be safe and not try to take matters into your own hands! Everyone has been so preoccupied with COVID-19 that they are missing another threat to their properties…Meth. That is what happened recently to my client Will.

Will called me about a new house that he had bought. He and his wife Sandi, buy and rehab houses. On this project they found some warning signs that I wanted to share with all of you. This is the top 5 signs your property has Meth!

#1 Holes cut in the walls

This may seem obvious, but I can’t tell you how many times it slips by a property owner. If there are random holes cut into walls that is because the Meth user has hidden something in the walls.

#2 Household chemicals

There are 4 methods used to make Meth. The Red phosphorus method, often called Red P, the Nazi Method, P2P method and the Shake ‘n Bake method. Most clandestine labs today are the Shake ‘n Bake method. Where the user gets household chemicals such as rubbing alcohol, Liquid fire grill starter, camp fuel, cold packs and lithium batteries and puts them int a 2 liter bottle and shakes it up to make meth. The color is often light brown and has crystals in the bottom. If you see on of these in your property do not touch it! Call the professionals at Bio-One immediately!

#3 Crack pipes and drug paraphernalia

Crack pipes are different from all other drug pipes. They are rounded at the end. Once you see one they are unmistakable.

#4 House maintenance

Meth users take apart wall sockets, TV remotes, wiring in the houses, lawn mowers and much more. If you see the property start to deteriorate, that is a sign of meth use.

#5 Unusual activity

Meth makes the user feel very hyper. If you notice your resident staying up at all hours of the night for days or weeks on end with no sleep that could be an indication of meth use.
